"We shall individually be held responsible for doing one jot less than we have ability to do...But when we give ourselves wholly to God, and in our work follow His directions, He makes Himself responsible for its accomplishment. He would not have us conjecture as to the success of our honest endeavors. Not once should we even think of failure. We are to cooperate with One who knows no failure." ~Messages to Young People, p. 309

Blogging Through The Books of Samuel: 1 Samuel 19

Scripture:

"Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very found of David..." ~1 Samuel 19:1

Observation:

You may not remember this chapter at first, however, after I tell you its' contents, you should be able to remember the stories with ease. OK, here's how it goes: Saul tells everyone to kill David. While David temporarily goes into hiding, Jonathan talks his dad out of the wicked act. Saul invites David back to the palace, which David does...until Saul tries to pin David to the wall with a spear! Uh-oh. David now makes his escape for good, heading for Samuel and some good advice. When Saul's men come to David's house to kill him, David's wife Michal (who just happens to be Saul's younger daughter) shows them "David" sick in bed...but really, it's just an idol with goat's hair on it.

Application:

I had a really hard time thinking of a lesson to draw from this chapter. After God's help and mulling it over for a while, I realized that it was this: having good friends are crucial. In David's case, his life was saved by friends many times. Do you have good friends who you could count on? How about you thank God right now for those wonderful people!

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for showing me how important it is to have good friends. Thank you so much for the good friends that I have, or if I don't have any right now, please show me how I could become friends with good people. Help me to remember that I always have a friend in you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
