"We shall individually be held responsible for doing one jot less than we have ability to do...But when we give ourselves wholly to God, and in our work follow His directions, He makes Himself responsible for its accomplishment. He would not have us conjecture as to the success of our honest endeavors. Not once should we even think of failure. We are to cooperate with One who knows no failure." ~Messages to Young People, p. 309

Blogging Through The Gospels: Mark 7

Good morning everyone! Today's passage of Scripture is Mark 7. This chapter covers another confrontation between the Pharisees and Jesus, and a couple of Jesus' miracles as well. Let's SOAP!

Scripture:

"You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!" ~Mark 7:9

Observation:

I must say that I almost did a double take when I read this verse. This verse, coming from Jesus? The tender, loving Jesus? Yes, but nevertheless Jesus really gave it to the Pharisees as he spelled out very clearly what they were doing.

Application:

Are we observing the commands of God, or our own traditions? If I stop to think about it, I wonder. Are we doing what God says, or doing what we want to? Now there's no problem doing what we want to in some situations (for example, I truly don't believe that God cares if you wear a red shirt or a blue shirt today!) but I do feel that in some of the bigger, more major decisions that we don't obey God as much as we should. If we have a decision that we're unclear on, we need to read the Bible and pray to God, to learn what we should do.

Prayer:

Dear God, help me not to be like the Pharisees, observing their own traditions instead of your laws. Empower me with the strength and the will to look to you and obey you more. Amen.
